Voice of the Sheep

bleatings of an amateur reformational credobaptistic theologian

  • To the Shepherd

But we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise. - Ps. 79:13

WHY AM I DOING THIS?: As much as an amateur blogger and theologian can do this...I want to make you think. I want you to know what you believe and why you believe it. And I want you to believe what you do - not because Mommy and Daddy believed it - but because it is the truth as contained in the Scriptures. I pray that God will use this blog and the resources and links provided here to grow its readers (including me) in the grace and knowledge of Christ. I pray this knowledge will result in a life of obedience that flows - not from fear or a desire to gain God's favor - but from a gratitude of knowing the truth about Who your Creator is, and what your Creator has done for you.

Corporate Resolution – To Be Kingdom Christians

Posted by Brian Thornton on January 7, 2007

Here are some of my notes from the sermon Pastor Butch preached on Sunday, 12/31/06. These are just some of the main points from Butch’s message that day. I encourage you to listen to the audio if you can. Butch submitted this resolution:

Resolved: To be kingdom Christians

  • salt – preserves what is good
  • light – leads out & overcomes darkness
  • yeast – effects its surroundings through permeation
  • ALL THREE HAVE A TRANSFORMING PRESENCE WHEN THEY ENTER SOMETHING

Keeping this resolution means at least FIVE things:

  1. Pray without ceasing
  2. Prepare our minds for action
  3. Redeem the time
  4. Strive to continuously sharpen one another
  5. Be ever mindful of our ministry of reconciliation

1. Praying without ceasing involves praying for:

  • Involvement in the culture
  • Protection from the culture
  • Awareness of our weaknesses
  • Wisdom
  • The mind of Christ
  • “Thy kingdom come” – The fulfilling of God’s plan

2. Prepare our minds for action

  • We have got to work on our minds – 1 Pet. 1:13
  • Seek God’s truth in all things ( is your mind oriented that way?)
  • Most Protestant minds are at total rest. How to prepare our minds:
    • Reading & Studying
    • Meditating on God and His Word – PS. 119:38
    • Be diligent in Bible reading (not content in only a cursory reading)
    • Use other books that may help
    • Improve conversation with others to this end
    • Practice according to what knowledge you do have (live it)

3. Redeem the time – Eph. 5:15

  • Teach us to number our days – Ps. 90:12
  • We are people with a mission
  • Our goal should be that everything we do must be seen in light of this holy & supreme calling as the people of God
  • Ex. – Reduction in channel surfing, the mindless playing of pop songs and saying, “I’m bored” – If you’re a Christian, how could you ever be bored?
  • Must re-evaluate our involvement in various activities – Are there better things I could be doing with the time God has given me?

4. Sharpen one another

  • “as iron sharpens iron” – Pr. 27:17
  • “stir up aone another” – Heb. 10:24
  • Throw ourselves intgo the one-another’s of the NT
  • Strive to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace
  • Who are you sharpening? Who are you being sharpened by?
  • Speak the truth in love
  • Love Christ and His kingdom
  • Why would you best friend be someone who is not a believer???

5. Be mindful or our ministry of reconciliation

  • 2 Cor. 4:1 – 5:21
  • v.20 – Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

Again, if you can, please listen to the audio of this sermon.
