But we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise. - Ps. 79:13

WHY AM I DOING THIS?: As much as an amateur blogger and theologian can do this...I want to make you think. I want you to know what you believe and why you believe it. And I want you to believe what you do - not because Mommy and Daddy believed it - but because it is the truth as contained in the Scriptures. I pray that God will use this blog and the resources and links provided here to grow its readers (including me) in the grace and knowledge of Christ. I pray this knowledge will result in a life of obedience that flows - not from fear or a desire to gain God's favor - but from a gratitude of knowing the truth about Who your Creator is, and what your Creator has done for you.

Thanks…And Good Night

Posted by Brian Thornton on January 17, 2007

Well, I figure that with the post on the MacArthur interview on election being picked up by many including Tim Challies and John Hendryx at Monergism, and with my comments on the horrific peddling of the Lord’s Table for profit also picked up by many such as Christian Research Net (formerly Slice) , that my site has probably reached the pinnacle of its exposure and popularity. So, I thought I would go out on top, and quit while I was ahead. I think it is time to shut this thing down.

I am afraid of being like one of those boxers (Holyfield, for example…whose house, by the way, I have been in to set up one of our moonwalks for one of his children’s birthday parties. Big, big house…but that is another boast for another blog.) who can’t read the writing on the wall (or the lesions on their brain). I am afraid of trying to best my most recent post again and again and again, only to get worse and worse and worse. I am afraid that I have raised the bar too high for myself already, and that the only place I have to go from here is down. I am afraid of blogger’s block (which I have right this very moment) resulting in pointless postings that serve no purpose but to place another check mark in the category of another day with a post (sorta like this one!). I see no alternative but to go out on top while I am at the pinnacle of site hits never heretofore reached and most likely never to be reached again. By the way…Mr. Challies, your attempt to crash my server did not succeed. Better luck next time. :)

Wait. There is one other possibility. The only other viable option I see working instead of shutting down the site is to make sure I set proper expectations from here on out…to set the bar low enough so that you don’t expect too much of me. And, the best way I know to do that is to refer you to the name and description of this site. Voice of the Sheep is not intended to assert that I am the voice of all the sheep of God’s pasture, but rather that I am but one of the sheep who has a voice, and that this site hopefully puts forth doctrinally sound voices of some of the other sheep who are much better than me at teaching and proclaiming the God of the Scriptures. The tagline of this site is where I really want you to focus when it comes to your level of expectations of me and what I do here. This site is truly the bleatings of a reformed amateur theologian…the key word being amateur. I have no doctorate. I am not a pastor. And I am certainly not a professional theologian.

I do, however, believe that every disciple of Christ is called to be a student of theology – the study of God and doctrine. And as such every child of God is to be transformed by the renewing of their mind, no longer being conformed to this world, so that through testing they may know what the will of God is. Every Christ follower is also to be diligent to present themselves approved of God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. Finally, every Christian is to always be prepared to give an account for the hope that is in them, yet with gentleness and respect.

Are you there yet? Have you reached the place of being able to say that you’ve crossed the finished line and finished the course? I’m certainly not there yet, nor do I pretend to even be close. But I hope and pray this site promotes the imperatives from Scripture that I mentioned above, and I ask you to strive with me to honor our Creator God with our words and actions. May our doctrine line up with our actions, and may we all seek to bring honor and glory and praise to the name above all names…Jesus Christ, the Alpha and Omega.

Well, now having set the proper level of what you can and should expect from me, I think I can continue forward with the operation of this site. I pray you will do what you can to make it even better with your comments and suggestions. Striving with you for His glory…
