But we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise. - Ps. 79:13

WHY AM I DOING THIS?: As much as an amateur blogger and theologian can do this...I want to make you think. I want you to know what you believe and why you believe it. And I want you to believe what you do - not because Mommy and Daddy believed it - but because it is the truth as contained in the Scriptures. I pray that God will use this blog and the resources and links provided here to grow its readers (including me) in the grace and knowledge of Christ. I pray this knowledge will result in a life of obedience that flows - not from fear or a desire to gain God's favor - but from a gratitude of knowing the truth about Who your Creator is, and what your Creator has done for you.

Outside of the Bible, Exactly HOW Does God Speak?

Posted by Brian Thornton on January 22, 2007

Dan Phillips over at TeamPyro has a really good post on Misreading God, continuing a linehearing of thought started there previously on decision-making and the will of God. I had posted a very short piece several days ago on the subjective vs. objective, and questioning which one we should put our trust in. The subjective side includes things such as feelings, impressions, leadings, inner peace, circumstances, and directions from others. People often try to describe receiving information through these various mediums as God speaking. They will use a phrase such as ‘God spoke to me’, but when questioned on exactly how God communicates this information, I have never seen a response that can definitively answer the manner in which God ’speaks’ in these various mediums.

To be sure, I have never seen anyone who holds to a belief that God speaks through these types of channels provide any biblical precedence for it whatsoever. The examples from Scripture usually cited do in fact display God speaking, but always in an audible voice. And I have yet to find anyone willing to admit they are hearing God speak to them in that manner (unless of course your name is Jesse Duplantis, Benny Hinn, Pat Robertson, etc.). What I am interested in knowing from those who believe that God speaks today outside of Scripture is precisely how that happens. What actually occurs when God speaks outside of the Bible? I am not interested in a defense of the position that God does speak through these various extra-biblical avenues…for the moment, and for the sake of argument (friendly debate and discussion) let’s take that as a given. What I want to know is, HOW? And I would appreciate some specifics.

If you are of the persuasion that God speaks to you, please comment here about it and provide specifics (not the details, just the manner in which God spoke to you). If He speaks to you through inner leadings…how exactly does that work? If He speaks to you through prayer…how exactly does that work? If He speaks to you through billboards, well..then perhaps we need to find you some help. Hopefully you get the idea.

I am not looking to beat up on anyone who happens to post here. I am genuinely interested in hearing specific details about how God speaks outside of the Bible.
