    C.H. Spurgeon

    QUOTE:
"No mischief that ever befalls our Christian communities is more lamentable than that which comes from the defection of the members. The heaviest sorrow that can wring a pastor's heart is such as comes from the [betrayal] of his most familiar friend. The direst calamity the Church can dread is not such as will arise from the assault of enemies outside, but from false brethren and traitors within the camp..." - from Why Some Leave Christ

  • About

WHY AM I DOING THIS?: As much as an amateur blogger and theologian can do this...I want to make you think. I want you to know what you believe and why you believe it. And I want you to believe what you do - not because Mommy and Daddy believed it - but because it is the truth as contained in the Scriptures. I pray that God will use this blog and the resources and links provided here to grow its readers (including me) in the grace and knowledge of Christ. I pray this knowledge will result in a life of obedience that flows - not from fear or a desire to gain God's favor - but from a gratitude of knowing the truth about Who your Creator is, and what your Creator has done for you.

I’ve Been Tagged!

Posted by Brian Thornton on May 5, 2007

I know my sister didn’t think I would respond to this, but I will give it a try. She tagged me along with six other people to list 7 things that others may not know about me, but are at the same time interesting. That’s a tall order…especially for a guy. No offense, ladies, but this tagging thing seems to not be very widespread among us male types. Maybe I can break that mold. Here are the rules that I pulled off Lisa’s web site:

Here’s how it goes: Each player starts with 7 random facts/habits about themselves. People who are tagged need to write on their own blog about their seven things, as well as these rules. You need to tag others and list their names. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them that they have been tagged and to read your blog!

Here are my 7 “unknown” and probably very boring tidbits about myself:

1 – As of the start of this season, I am a 24  junkie! Pam and I had never watched even one episode before this year, but we decided to give it a try when the new season started. And we were hooked. We were so hooked, in fact, that we have been ordering previous seasons via Netflix (we are up to season two, disc three, which puts us at episodes nine thru twelve). The Netflix versions are awesome because…NO COMMERCIALS!!!

2 – I own my own party planning and event business. That’s just code for inflatable moonwalks, giant slides, obstacle courses, cotton candy, popcorn,  table, tents, chairs, etc. We started out in ‘96 doing what we called ‘yard cards’, setting up flamingos, cows, tombstones, etc., in people’s yards for their birthdays and anniversaries and other special occasions. We purchased our first moonwalk in ‘97, and now we have twenty-five different inflatable units.

3 – I have over forty Bibles in my home…mainly in my office. I started teaching a class several years ago on the history of the English Bible, and my collection began to grow at that time. Among my favorites are my copy of Young’s Literal Translation, my blue calfskin NASB In-Touch Note-Takers Bible (yes, it is very soft), a true facsimile of the original 1611 King James Version, and an enlarged true facsimile of the 1560 Geneva Bible. I also have three original, authentic Bible leafs, one each from a genuine 1560 Geneva Bible, a 1611 King James Bible, and a 1791 Isaac Collins Bible (the first family Bible ever printed in America).

4 – I hate yardwork! I loathe it. I detest it. While others are praying for rain during our Georgia drought-filled summers, I am happy that my grass is not growing so I won’t have to cut it as much. I am a self-admitted slacker when it comes to groundskeeping. Sorry, babe (that’s my wife, by the way).

5 – I love Daytona Beach! I have been going since before I was born, and each year we take our summer vacation there along with my mom and dad, and sometimes my sister and her family. It is always a great time. I love it that we are not tourists when there. We basically sit on the beach or by the pool all week and do nothing, and we know all the great restaurants, including Aunt Catfish’s, Shell’s, Blackbeard’s, and Our Deck Down Under.

6 – Pam and I met and knew each other in college. We were both very involved with the Baptist Student Union (me with pool and softball…her with leading the ensemble singing group). However, we did not get married until about seven years later. I had not seen Pam in several years since college, but ran into her at the Old Spaghetti Factory while I was on a date with someone else. Our name had never been called to be seated, so we were still waiting out in the foyer of the restaurant, and Pam had gotten up to make a phone call (at a pay phone…that shows you how long ago this was!) and was walking through the waiting area when I saw her. It took me six months to get up the nerve to call her and ask her out. I finally did it on April 1st of ‘92…she thought it was some kind of joke. We were engaged four months later, and the rest, as they say…is history.

7 -  When I was in elementary school, two distinct events stand out in my mind…both of which involved the same childhood friend, Andy Webb. There are others, but I shan’t mention them here in public! As Andy and I were being considered for being named as patrols (it was a big deal…you got to wear an orange vest with a badge and yell at younger kids to stop running through the halls), we were asked to raise the flag one schoolday morning. We carefully took the flag outside, secured it to the cable, raised it to its maximum height, and secured it to the pole (or so we thought). About an hour or so later we were paged to the principal’s office because the flag had come loose and fallen to half mast, prompting several calls to the school to find out who had died. The second incident involved a water fight in the boys bathroom and a handful of water thrown by me at Andy who ducked while standing at the exit door, thereby resulting in the water hitting my fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Saxon (who had just pushed open the door to tell us to get back to our classroom), right in the face.

Okay, here’s my seven to tag:
