bleatings of an amateur reformational credobaptistic theologian

But we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise. - Ps. 79:13

WHY AM I DOING THIS?: As much as an amateur blogger and theologian can do this...I want to make you think. I want you to know what you believe and why you believe it. And I want you to believe what you do - not because Mommy and Daddy believed it - but because it is the truth as contained in the Scriptures. I pray that God will use this blog and the resources and links provided here to grow its readers (including me) in the grace and knowledge of Christ. I pray this knowledge will result in a life of obedience that flows - not from fear or a desire to gain God's favor - but from a gratitude of knowing the truth about Who your Creator is, and what your Creator has done for you.

Failing My Resolution

Posted by Brian Thornton on June 14, 2007

Back in January I resolved (sort of) to read through some specific titles in ‘07 including the following:

Archaeological Study Bible – NIV (reading through now)

Getting the Gospel Right – Sproul
A Method For Prayer – Matthew Henry (partially read)
Nine Marks of a Healthy Church – Dever (reading now)
The Gospel According to Jesus – MacArthur
Willing to Believe – Sproul
Mission Accomplished – Horton
Pilgrim’s Progress – Bunyan

My To-Read  list also includes the titles that are recommended each month from the elders of my church, which through July are:

Jan: Resolutions – Edwards
Feb: God of Promise – Horton
Mar: The Sovereignty of God – Pink
Apr: The Truth War – MacArthur (currently reading)
May: Transforming Grace – Bridges
Jun: Written in Stone – Ryken
Jul: The Law of Perfect Freedom – Horton

As you can see from the titles that have been crossed out (or not crossed out), I have a long way to go, and only half the year to get there. I am not very persistent when it comes to reading. I will go several days reading a good portion each day, and then go even several days more not reading a word. I wish I was more disciplined in my reading, and I hope to be more consistent from now until December.

One excuse (if you can call it that) is that we are extremely busy right now with our business. But, that really is not a good reason, so I’ll just have to stick with the truth…I get lazy.

Is this common to anyone else, or am I just a pathetic example of how not to maintain a light reading schedule throughout the year?
