Honestly, I’ve never really given it much thought as to whether or not Luther actually did
nail his 95 Theses to the Castle Church door in Wittenberg. But over the last several weeks, I have heard or read from more than one source that the nailing of the 95 Theses to the church door may be just a legend.
The first I even heard of this was from a friend at church a few weeks ago who said one of his son’s teachers at school was teaching in class that it was only a myth. Then I was watching a short documentary on Luther from the Christian History Institute, and it also said that Luther probably did not actually nail his theses to the door. Further study has revealed that doubt over Luther’s Theses being nailed to the Wittenberg Church door is widespread. Apparently, the first time the nailing of the theses was mentioned was by Phillip Melanchthon.
What is not in doubt, however, is that Luther did mail his theses to several friends and bishops. It is also known that upcoming disputes/questions were regulary nailed to or hung on the church door in Wittenberg. We just don’t know for sure if Luther’s Theses was ever actually displayed in this way, as it was never mentioned until after his death, and Luther himself never spoke of doing such a thing.
