But we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise. - Ps. 79:13

WHY AM I DOING THIS?: As much as an amateur blogger and theologian can do this...I want to make you think. I want you to know what you believe and why you believe it. And I want you to believe what you do - not because Mommy and Daddy believed it - but because it is the truth as contained in the Scriptures. I pray that God will use this blog and the resources and links provided here to grow its readers (including me) in the grace and knowledge of Christ. I pray this knowledge will result in a life of obedience that flows - not from fear or a desire to gain God's favor - but from a gratitude of knowing the truth about Who your Creator is, and what your Creator has done for you.

Did Luther Nail or Mail His 95 Theses?

Posted by Brian Thornton on October 4, 2007

Honestly, I’ve never really given it much thought as to whether or not Luther actually didluther95 nail his 95 Theses to the Castle Church door in Wittenberg. But over the last several weeks, I have heard or read from more than one source that the nailing of the 95 Theses to the church door may be just a legend.

The first I even heard of this was from a friend at church a few weeks ago who said one of his son’s teachers at school was teaching in class that it was only a myth. Then I was watching a short documentary on Luther from the Christian History Institute, and it also said that Luther probably did not actually nail his theses to the door. Further study has revealed that doubt over Luther’s Theses being nailed to the Wittenberg Church door is widespread. Apparently, the first time the nailing of the theses was mentioned was by Phillip Melanchthon.

What is not  in doubt, however, is that Luther did  mail his theses to several friends and bishops. It is also known that upcoming disputes/questions were regulary nailed to or hung on the church door in Wittenberg. We just don’t know for sure if Luther’s Theses was ever actually displayed in this way, as it was never mentioned until after his death, and Luther himself never spoke of doing such a thing.

Any comments or thoughts?

31 Days of Praying for Your Pastor – Day 4

Posted by Brian Thornton on October 4, 2007

DAY 4:
Pray that your pastor will counsel and teach with discernment through the wise use of Scripture and faith in God’s power to work. Pray that he will be protected from the effects of sinful or negative attitudes that he encounters as he counsels.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. James 1:5-6
