Here are four scenarios. You be the judge.
Scenario ONE -
I have a great newly released CD featuring the lyrics of old hymns put to new music, and I make a free copy of it and give it to my Mom and Dad.
Scenario TWO -
My friends introduced me to an online peer-to-peer file sharing program where I can download great newly released music and videos for free, and share some of my own collection as well.
Scenario THREE -
My internet connection has been pretty slow…that is until one of my neighbors upgraded to high-speed DSL. He has unsecured WiFi in his house and, what luck, I am able to pick up his signal! Now I can surf at blazing speeds, too! I sure would like to thank him, but I don’t even know who he is.
Scenario FOUR -
Cable is getting too expensive for me, but my next door neighbor has it. He has graciously run a line from his house to mine to allow me to continue receiving the benefits of a cable subscription…but at only half the cost. This is perfectly okay to do, since he and I will split the cost of his monthly bill.
Do any of these not fall in the category of stealing? Why or why not? Are any of these legal, but still should be considered as stealing? Are there any circumstances that would make any of these scenarios okay to do? Is it a violation of the 8th Commandment to receive services (which are normally rendered in exchange for payment) without actually paying for those services? I know I don’t usually get many comments on this site, but I hope to hear from some of you on these.
