I must admit that this is a very interesting topic.
I have heard it put forth that the unpardonable sin is the sin of unbelief in Jesus Christ, but the context of Jesus’ reference to a sin that was unpardonable came immediately after His works of miracles were attributed to Satan.
I have heard that those in the remotest parts of the earth who never had a chance to hear the gospel either get a chance to accept or reject Jesus after death, or they are accepted on their good heart apart from faith in Christ. The problem with the former view is that Scripture says it is appointed for a man to die once, then comes judgment, and the problem with the latter position is that Jesus Himself clearly stated that no one comes to the Father but through Him.
So, if a person isn’t condemned because they have rejected Christ, then why do they go to hell to suffer eternal punishment?
We find the answer in Romans 1:
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. – Rom. 1:18-20
They are not without excuse because they have rejected the message of salvation through repentance from sin and faith in Jesus Christ, they are without excuse because what is evident of God in creation has condemned them.
A.W. Pink states it plainly in The Sovereignty of God:
“The heathen will not perish because they have not believed in Christ, but because they failed to live up to the light which they did have – the testimony of God in nature and conscience.” – p.161
What is evident in creation is enough to condemn them, but not enough to save them. Only the gospel of Jesus Christ can save, which is why we must have a heart to take the message of Jesus Christ to the uttermost parts of the earth. It is the only hope for the lost.
