WHY AM I DOING THIS?: As much as an amateur blogger and theologian can do this...I want to make you think. I want you to know what you believe and why you believe it. And I want you to believe what you do - not because Mommy and Daddy believed it - but because it is the truth as contained in the Scriptures. I pray that God will use this blog and the resources and links provided here to grow its readers (including me) in the grace and knowledge of Christ. I pray this knowledge will result in a life of obedience that flows - not from fear or a desire to gain God's favor - but from a gratitude of knowing the truth about Who your Creator is, and what your Creator has done for you.

Mormons, They Can’t Handle the Truth…About Their Own Religion

Posted by Brian Thornton on December 21, 2007

Why is it so hard to get a Mormon to actually engage in dialog about what they really believe? James White has thoroughly exposed their embarrassing theology with a myriad of posts which can be found here. I did a brief post touching on Mormonism a few days ago, resulting someone linking to a blog that has one article on the whole site attempting to show that Mormons are more Christian than Christians. When I tried to engage the proponents of this site on their own turf, the first several posts I made were deleted, and the last couple have not really been addressed at all. I made note of this under the comments section of my post, pointing out how no one on the Mormon side seemed to be willing to engage. This resulted in someone else commenting, asking what those specific questions were and saying they would be glad to interact with my position, but they were never heard from again.

Why does it seem that Mormons are afraid to stand up and proclaim boldly what they believe (on a side note, why does it seem that so many professing Christians are afraid to do the very same thing – another topic for another day)? White, commenting on the incredible opportunity given to Mormons recently by FoxNews.com when they submitted a list of questions to the Mormon Church and posted the answers on the front page of their site, said, “the Mormon Church did the proverbial face-plant, to my amazement, and surely to the chagrin of any believing Mormon. No wonder their numbers are flat! They have completely lost their direction and their guts at the highest levels! Instead of giving bold, clear answers, the resultant replies were spineless attempts at spin, all posted on the front page of FoxNews.com.

The only answer I can come up with as to why Mormons are so afraid to make public their own religious beliefs is because much of it is so far fetched (from the mind of one deluded individual) that it is, quite simply, embarrassing.

Consider some of these teachings (from Mormons):

  • Jesus is the spirit brother of both angels and all mankind.
  • Before you and I were born, we lived with God the Father and our brother Jesus
    Christ.
  • Jesus Christ will return only to Jackson County, Missouri
  • The following “personages” appeared to Joseph Smith: Abraham, Adam, Elijah, God the Father, James, Jesus Christ, John the Baptist, John the Beloved, Alvin (a friend of Smith’s who had died), Moroni (this is the angel who delivered the golden plates to Smith), Moses, Paul, Peter, Satan, and at least three other unnamed angels.
  • John Taylor claimed that Joseph Smith saw Enoch
  • Oliver B. Huntington claimed that Joseph Smith saw Eve
  • Eliza R. Snow claimed that Joseph Smith saw an unnamed angel three times, commanding him to practice polygamy
  • Joseph entered into plural marriages with 29–33 women, 7 of whom were under the age of 18. The youngest was Helen Mar Kimball, daughter of LDS apostle Heber C. Kimball, who was 14. The rest were 16 (two) or 17 (three). One wife (Maria Winchester) about which virtually nothing is known, was either 14 or 15.
  • “no man or woman in this dispensation will ever enter into the celestial kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith” – Brigham Young
  • From Huntington, “As far back as 1837, I know that he [Joseph Smith] said the moon was inhabited by men and women the same as this earth, and that they lived to a greater age than we do — that they live generally to near the age of a 1,000 years.”
  • God the Father also had many other spirit children [other than Jesus], created in His image and that of His Only Begotten. These children include all humans born on the earth.
  • There never was a time when there were not worlds in existence as this world is, and they pass through similar changes in abiding their creation preparatory to exaltation. Worlds have always been in progress, and eternally will be.
  • Every world has had an Adam and an Eve, named so simply because the first man is always called Adam and the first woman, Eve.
  • Kolob governs all the planets which belong to the same order as the earth and is after the reckoning of the Lord’s times, seasons and revolutions thereof. One revolution of Kolob is a day unto the Lord and one day in Kolob is equal to a thousand years on earth.

Mormons don’t seem to be willing to publicly affirm what their religion actually teaches. They appear to be rather embarrassed by it, as evidenced by the fact that it is so hard to get a Mormon to engage the truth of their religion. Instead, as in the response to the questions by FoxNews.com to the Mormon Church, they hide behind vague responses which cloud rather than clarify their beliefs.
