Here is my answer to this question…
Where is their hope, in themselves as they maintain their salvation, or in the person and work of Christ and what He has already done on their behalf and in their place? Are they holding to a works-based righteousness, or are they resting in the perfect righteousness of the Savior?
When God has begun the work and will complete the work (Phil. 1:6), then the work is all of God, and nothing I do will undo it. If my salvation is based upon my ability to sustain a certain level of righteousness, then I will fail every time and will NEVER reach a point where I have attained God’s favor, and I along with everyone else at that point are hopelessly lost and will be condemned to the eternal wrath and curse of God. My good works do not sustain my standing before God, but rather flow from my heart of gratitude for what Christ has already perfectly done for me…not so that I can maintain my hold on my salvation. Those who have a correct view of the person and work of Christ, I think, will not have an incorrect view on the security of their position in Christ.
I do believe it is possible for someone to be weak in the faith and have an erroneous view of the eternal security of the believer in Christ…but when confronted and corrected, they – being a child of God – will see and understand and be convinced of the truth. On the other hand, someone who has been presented with the truth of Scripture concerning who does the saving and who maintains that salvation (Christ) and what the basis is for their salvation, but still rejects that truth…well, that’s a much more serious situation, I’m afraid.
Thoughts, anyone?
