from the 1689 Baptist Confession:
The authority of the Holy Scripture, for which it ought to be believed, depends not on the testimony of any man or church, but wholly upon God its Author (Who is Truth itself). Therefore it is to be received because it is the Word of God.
-So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. – 2 Pet. 1:19-21
What an awesome exhortation and declaration of truth. We would do well to pay attention to Scripture because it is just like a lamp shining in a dark place. Have you ever been in a dark place, a REALLY dark place? We went tent camping at Unicoi State Park last December. Unlike our previous travel trailer, the tent had no bathroom and no shower, so if any of us felt the call of nature, we couldn’t answer that call in nature (except for us guys to do #1) but had to make the trek to the bath house, or what is called a comfort station.
In the mountains, when the moon is not up or hidden by clouds, it is VERY, VERY dark. The trail leading to the showers and bathrooms was lined with small lamps, and as long as you kept your gaze on those lamps, you could easily walk the trail and navigate the winding path. However, as soon as you took your eyes off the lamps and looked to your left or right, you would immediately become disoriented and unsure of where to take the next step. Now that’s dark!
The word of God is just like those trail lights. It is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, and we would do well to pay attention to it, because it shows us the way. Are you paying attention to the lamp, or are you cutting your own path?
