But we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise. - Ps. 79:13

WHY AM I DOING THIS?: As much as an amateur blogger and theologian can do this...I want to make you think. I want you to know what you believe and why you believe it. And I want you to believe what you do - not because Mommy and Daddy believed it - but because it is the truth as contained in the Scriptures. I pray that God will use this blog and the resources and links provided here to grow its readers (including me) in the grace and knowledge of Christ. I pray this knowledge will result in a life of obedience that flows - not from fear or a desire to gain God's favor - but from a gratitude of knowing the truth about Who your Creator is, and what your Creator has done for you.

Making Good Use of Technology

Posted by Brian Thornton on August 12, 2008

A few years ago I purchased a 4th generation 20gb iPod from Ligonier Ministries, which came preloaded with some great resources from Dr. Sproul. That iPod has served me well after a few hiccups here and there with the hard drive, but it finally died about a month ago, even after attempts by me to revive it by opening the thing up, disconnecting the hard drive and battery, reconnecting everything, etc.

It wasn’t but a few days later when I began to go through withdrawal and was soon missing my quick and easy access to great music, podcasts, and sermons. Being the eBay wiz that I am (yeah right, I’ve done a total of 82 transactions), I began searching for a used iPod, and eventually found one just like mine for a grand total of $29! Talk about a great buy, most of the working 20gb 4th gen iPods usually go for around $50-$60 on eBay! I then thought I would try to find one for Pam, and after searching I was able to secure one for her for $32. Well, after that I decided to find a new hard drive for my original one and was able to bring it back to life for only $20!

Now, none of that is the reason for this post. What I want to tell you is that I gave my old iPod to my oldest son, who is ten years old. The other night when I walked into his room to tell him goodnight, he had his earphones in and I asked him what he was listening to, and he said, “The White Horse Inn.”

Then I found out yesterday that, while he (10) and his brothers (7 & 5 1/2) were all designing marvelous new contraptions with their Knex sets (perhaps the best gifts we have ever given them), that they decided to listen to something on the iPod, and ended up listening to one of the sermons from our church by Butch Rumble, our pastor! Talk about a great use of their time! Being constructive with their hands while being constructive with their ears…and doing it all on their own!

Now THAT’S making good use of technology, and it fills this father’s heart with joy to know what they (not just listened to, but) wanted to hear while they worked together.
