WHY AM I DOING THIS?: As much as an amateur blogger and theologian can do this...I want to make you think. I want you to know what you believe and why you believe it. And I want you to believe what you do - not because Mommy and Daddy believed it - but because it is the truth as contained in the Scriptures. I pray that God will use this blog and the resources and links provided here to grow its readers (including me) in the grace and knowledge of Christ. I pray this knowledge will result in a life of obedience that flows - not from fear or a desire to gain God's favor - but from a gratitude of knowing the truth about Who your Creator is, and what your Creator has done for you.

Conferences and Web Sites (shameless plug)

Posted by Brian Thornton on August 14, 2008

Reformation Society of South Central Alaska

James White has done a very brief post from Anchorage, Alaska, where he is taking part in a conference along with Steve Lawson and Tom Ascol.

I have an interest in this conference for a couple of reasons. For one thing, I have a dear friend and brother in Christ in Alaska who is one of the main ones heading this conference up. He is working very hard at trying to get me and my family out there to see him, and I pray that one day we are able to go for a visit. I know he has worked hard preparing for this time together with White, Lawson and Ascol, and I am looking forward to hearing how everything goes.

For another thing, yours truly designed the web site for the Reformation Society of South Central Alaska, who is the very new and young organization sponsoring the event. I know the web site is not much, but it was one of my first attempts at designing basic web sites for people/groups who don’t need a lot of frills, and who aren’t looking to fork over an arm and a leg to get on the web.

Anyway, if you have time, click on the image or the RSSCA name above to see information about the conference where Dr. White is this week. And if you know of anyone who’s ready for a site or needs one, tell them to check out my site, and they can find out how to…

Never Read a Bad Book

Posted by Brian Thornton on August 14, 2008

The following is from Today’s Grace Gem:

If you would lead a pure life–have nothing to do with bad books and impure newspapers. With such immoral literature as is coming forth from our swift-revolving printing-presses, there is no excuse for dragging one’s self through sewers of unchastity.

Never read a bad book! By the time you get through the first chapter, you will see the drift of it. If you find the hoof-prints of the devil in the pictures, or in the style, or in the plot–away with it! You may tear your coat, or break a vase–and repair them again. But it takes less than an hour to do your soul a damage–which no time can entirely repair!

Look carefully over your child’s library; see which book he reads after he has gone to bed, with the light turned down. – Talmadge

Is this good advice? Should we stay away from ‘bad’ books, or do we need to invest some of our limited time on this earth knowing what error is out there?

I personally think that the best way to spend our time is by investing in GOOD books. Why waste time reading bad ones when knowing the truth is what will set you free? As I often heard Hank Hannegraaff say when I used to listen to the Bible Answer Man, we should train ourselves to be so familiar with the truth that when see something that is false, we know it in an instant.

I know there are many Christians who spend a great deal of time reading all sorts of books, including a great majority of them that are ‘bad’. This amateur theologian considers that an unwise practice…TILIFICI (take it, leave it, flush it, or chunk it).
