In a similar vein as yesterday’s post on reading bad books, John Piper makes this statement in a recent blog post:
Discernment is not created in God’s people by brokenness, humility, reverence, and repentance. It is created by biblical truth and the application of truth by the power of the Holy Spirit to our hearts and minds. When that happens, then the brokenness, humility, reverence, and repentance will have the strong fiber of the full counsel of God in them. They will be profoundly Christian and not merely religious and emotional and psychological.
True brokenness, humility, reverence and repentance comes when one has discernment, and discernment comes from knowing biblical truth, and biblical truth comes from…the Bible! So, in order to have discernment, in order to have humility, in order to have true repentance, the knowledge of biblical truth is a must. It is a prerequisite. Some claim to have discernment, but have no knowledge of biblical truth. Some appear to show reverence, but the word of truth is foreign to their mind and heart. Some express humility, but that humility is not flowing from a knowledge and understanding of the Scriptures.
In a nutshell, what we are saying is that Sola Scriptura is true. God’s revealed will to us, which is contained ONLY in His Word, is our sum and total sufficient rule for faith and practice. It is our only source for knowing Him, and for knowing what He requires of us. A truly godly life, which is exhibited in brokenness, humility, reverence and repentance, flows from one source…the word of truth.
