In Obama’s acceptance speech from the Democrat convention tonight, he cites Scripture in the following closing remarks:
At this moment, in this election, we must pledge once more to march into the future. Let us keep that promise – that American promise – and in the words of Scripture hold firmly, without wavering, to the hope that we confess.
Thank you, God Bless you, and God Bless the United States of America.
Hold firmly, without wavering, to the hope that we confess. Hold firmly to what? Do not waver from what? To what hope do ‘we’ confess? Hope in what? A confession of what? Barack Obama…what Scripture are you citing that applies to this or any country and its government woes and the so-called need for change?
I believe the passage he is pulling those phrases from is Hebrews 10:23. Here is that verse in its context:
Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a terrifying expectation of judgment and THE FURY OF A FIRE WHICH WILL CONSUME THE ADVERSARIES.
I ask you: is Obama (and what he represents) among the ‘us’ who are encouraged to hold fast the confession of our hope (Christ), or is he among those for whom there awaits the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries? Far be it for me to make a final declaration on that question. But consider the fruit of this man and what he promotes even in this acceptance speech – things like abortion and homosexuality – and it is more understandable how a person like Obama who claims to possess faith in Christ can so horrendously misquote a passage from Hebrews which is so clearly about faith in the risen Christ and not wavering from a confession in Him. It has nothing to do with government or politics or a presidential election.
If Obama had even a slight clue what this passage is about, then maybe he wouldn’t have used it to try and sound profound and knowledgeable of what Scripture says, and maybe he would have realized its warnings to those who profess faith, but who may not possess it.
